Alternatives to MyBlogLog

For better or worse MyBlogLog is the de facto standard when it comes to connecting with other bloggers. They have the most traction within the blogging community forum and they are backed by the juggernaut that is Yahoo.

However there are some alternatives out there.

Spicypage ranks blogs and other sites by user vote. They have a widget that you can put on your site that allows visitors to vote for your blog and will also display your recent voters or visitors. They’ve also just added a feature where you can submit articles from your blog.

According to their site, Explode is a go-anywhere global networking system. It allows anyone to include a distributed friends widget on their site, send these friends comments and keep connected.

Blog Woods is just like MyBlogLog, but with user voting. It’s visual design is even more ghetto than MyBlogLog, but I’ve seen alot of familiar faces on there, so people are signing up. With a visual makeover they would make more of an impact. They also have a widget you can put on your site.

In their own words MillionDollarAvatar is a tool to promote your site and introduce users to new sites online. Their profile pages have a nice design but the name makes me cringe, not that I should talk. Their front page displays 100 random avatars and is reset every 24 hours.

Others Online is an interesting one. When you create a profile you include keywords/tags for your site. These tags are then used to match your site with ones with similar interests as your own. If those sites have the Others Online widget installed your site will be displayed to visitors. They also have a browser toolbar which works in a similar way displaying sites that are relevant to the one you are browsing.

Blog Catalog started off as just another boring blog directory, but has recently morphed into a fully fledged competitor to MyBlogLog. The design of Blog Catalog addresses many of the issues I have with MyBlogLog.

Navigation is intuitive.
You can browse by category, country, or language.
Recent posts are given good real estate.
The visual design is easy on the eyes.

Blog Catalog may have a tough time competing with MyBlogLog but they are off to a good start. I’ve already started to notice quite a few blogs displaying the Blog Catalog widget.

Final Word:The only one of these services I haven’t signed up for yet is Others Online but I’ll be doing so over the next few days, and I should have a writeup on them some time in the near future.

The two I would recommend trying out are Blog Catalog and Others Online. They seem to be the ones offering the most interesting and polished service. Personally I won’t be adding any other widgets to my sidebar. Too many widgets will slow down page loading times and visually it’s a bit of an eyesoar when a sidebar becomes overpopulated. You may feel differently however.

How To Get Noticed At MyBlogLog

There are four things you need to do in order to get noticed at MyBlogLog, and when you get noticed, you will receive traffic to your blog or website. I’ll try to be brief.

First, you need to add new contacts. The easiest way to do this is by clicking on members, and add the newest members of MyBlogLog. They are “always” online, and they don’t have many friends. Therefore, they will instantly notice you and most likely they will add you as their contact right away. They might even visit your blog/website within a few minutes.

Just click on their avatar, then click on “Add to my contacts”. That’s all, now they are your contacts and they will receive an e-mail that you have added them as your contact. You can add my contact here: Pride SEO

Second, you should join communities. The easiest way to do this is by joining new communities. Just click on communities (in the top menu) and then on new communities. You’ll see the two newest communities, click on the images. Then finally, click on join community. You’ll see your image after you have successfully joined the community. You can also join large communities such as Top 50 Communities or even my own community.

Third, you should leave a comment on user’s profiles and on their website community profile. When you leave a message, they will receive an e-mail or they will receive a notification on their MyBlogLog profile. This way, they will notice you. But remember to leave an interesting comment, and not just a “Hello there” comment (you know what I mean).

Fourth, when you receive comments (and you should receive some after you have posted your comments all over the place), be sure to respond to them promptly and thank them for their message. When you do, people will start to recognize you as a professional MyBlogLog user, one that interacts with other users and one that they should read more about (next step is reading your profile, be sure to add some interesting information).

If you are not using MyBlogLog, I urge you to join and start using it. This is a very interesting social community and if you use it right, it will drive massive traffic to your blogs or websites.

SEO Tips for Facebook

SEO has been a part and parcel of an Internet marketer’s life. Ranking high in Facebook has been a necessity if you are looking for optimizing your Online Business for Search Engines and Social Media at the same time. And to be frank, it is essential to consider both these frontiers simultaneously rather than being strong in one and neglecting the other. As Facebook has become an Hub for Netizens, it is very essential to consider it when Social Media Marketing comes into Picture. And this is the reason why Facebook Search Engine Optimization is such a hot topic. It has become a bare necessity to Rank high in Facebook search if you wish to gain Visibility in the Social Media scene.

Important Facebook SEO tips which will help you rank high in the Facebook Search Engine:

1. Allow Public visibility of your Content

Due to the recent problems of Facebook privacy settings, there is still a lot of confusion regarding this. Remember that if you keep the content which you want to share as Public, then Facebook can show it to all those who search for it. Keeping it protected to any particular group will enable visibility of your content to only that particular group.

2. Use proper Keywords in the Title/URL

Now you would say, this tip is very similar to our normal SEO tip! But the TITLE we are considering here is a bit different. Here the title can be the Title of the Blog Post which you are sharing or even whatever is your Status Update, or may be even the Name of some Facebook Group. If it is a Title of the Blog post then you should optimize it for normal SEs like Google, Bing/MSN and Yahoo and it will help you on Facebook too(nothing special required here). But if you are writing a Status Update or Creating a post in Facebook Groups then remember to include the Keywords you want to rank for!

Do not forget to Select a proper Facebook Vanity URL for Professioal pages.

3. Optimize Meta Tags properly

When you share a link on Facebook using the ‘Link option’, Facebook by default uses the meta description of the Shared Webpage as an effective meta tag, but if that webpage does not include any meta description tag, then it catches the first 160-200 character of the content and uses it as the effective Meta tags. You can write the description of this Link in the Update Space available using proper keywords.
Also, When you make some group the Description of the Group is used as the effective meta tags for Facebook Search engine.

4. Likes, Shares and Number of Mutual Friends

If you are planning to rank higher then the Number of Share and the Number of Likes for your Content/Comment (by different people) does come into picture. The more the number of Likes and Shares, the higher will be your position in Facebook Search rankings. When searching for different Individuals, the number of Mutual friends are considered as a ranking factor.

5. Freshness of the Content matters the Most

If you write a Status update containing some keywords and someone else writes a very similar Status update some time after you write it, it is highly possible that his/her status update will rank higher for the keywords and not yours. Facebook gives a lot of stress on Real time (some time difference is always there) Search Engine results and so you don’t have any scope for error and rest. You must keep updating various data on Facebook which you want to rank in Facebook search.
